The club that survived lockdown!

During one of the Covid lockdowns, I decided to set up a film club with family and friends. There are six of us and we meet online every two weeks, sometimes from different parts of the UK and occasionally from different countries altogether.

Each session, one of us chooses a film for everyone to watch before we meet. We take turns selecting and after our discussion, we rate the film. The scores are averaged, complete with ‘winners’ for each round.

Eventually, we introduced themed rounds to keep things interesting. We have explored everything from book-to-film adaptations and romance to thrillers and even the seven deadly sins. These themes have led us to discover movies we would never have chosen on our own.

Our fortnightly calls have become something we all look forward to; a way to stay connected, share opinions (and sometimes disagreements!) and enjoy great cinema together. The club will be celebrating its fifth anniversary in March 2026 and it is amazing to think how something born out of lockdown has grown into such a meaningful tradition.
